The History of The Bowen Technique
The Bowen Technique is a system of gentle muscle, tendon and connective tissue movements that realign the body, stimulate energy flow and facilitate inner healing.
The Technique was developed in Geelong, Australia, soon after World War II by Tom Bowen (1916-1982) who was a self-taught masseur.
How does it work?
With the use of fingers or thumbs, the practitioner targets specific points on the muscles where there is a build up of stress. In the first session, two to eight points on the body are stimulated including those on the back, neck, shoulders, hamstrings and knees. Gradually additional points are added in areas where further tension is identified.
An unusual characteristic of The Bowen Technique is that the practitioner leaves the room several times during a session so that the client can rest for a few minutes. The purpose of these breaks is to allow the body to integrate the changes that these subtle moves initiate.
The benefits of The Bowen Technique
Muscular injuries and back pain, sciatica, migraines and fibromyalgia are some of the ailments that can be treated by The Bowen Technique. As the body responds to the therapist’s skilful touch, its own neuromuscular reflexes begin to release stiffened joints, relax muscles, and improve the circulation of the blood and lymphatic fluids.
It is believed that this gentle, yet powerful technique is able to calm the autonomic nervous system, slow the heart rate and induce profound relaxation. For this reason, it has also been utilised to reduce anxiety and emotional problems, as well as offer comfort to those who suffer from a terminal illness.
What to expect during a consultation
An initial assessment is made by the practitioner before the session commences. During the treatment, a series of very light and non-invasive movements are performed on specific points on the body. Often there is a two to ten minute pause between moves so that the body can adjust. Most sessions last 30 to 45 minutes and about two to three consultations are recommended.
Once the treatment is over, clients are advised to drink plenty of water, take a walk, and avoid strenuous forms of bodywork like Swedish Massage or Shiatsu for at least a week, so that the effects of the session can be reinforced.
